| dc.description.resumo | This study is characterized as a literature review on the relationship between periodontal disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between periodontal disease and Alzheimer’s Disease, highlighting the main mechanisms involved in this relationship, as well as the importance of preventive dental care for these patients. The methodology consisted of analyzing scientific articles published between 2020 and 2026, obtained from SciELO, PubMed, BVS, and Google Scholar databases. The literature review demonstrated that periodontal bacteria and inflammatory mediators produced during periodontal disease may reach the bloodstream and contribute to inflammatory processes in the central nervous system associated with the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. The studies also showed a higher prevalence of oral alterations in patients with cognitive impairment, due to difficulties with self-care and dependence on caregivers. Preventive dental follow-up was also found to assist in maintaining oral health, masticatory function, and quality of life in these individuals. It is concluded that oral health plays an important role in the comprehensive care of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, and that prevention, continuous dental monitoring, and multidisciplinary care are essential for promoting health and improving the quality of life of these patients. | EN |
