| dc.description.resumo | Introduction: Breastfeeding is recognized worldwide as an essential intervention for a child’s full development, exerting a decisive influence on the maturation of orofacial structures and the stomatognathic system. The act of suckling at the mother’s breast acts as a vigorous myofunctional exercise that functions as a natural orthopedic treatment, stimulating balanced growth of the maxilla and mandible and preparing the face for functions such as breathing and chewing. Objective: This study aims to analyze, through a review of the literature published between 2020 and 2025, the influence of breastfeeding on the prevention of harmful oral habits and the development of malocclusions in children during the primary and mixed dentition phases. Justification: The biomechanics of natural sucking require coordinated muscular effort that promotes harmonious craniofacial development, whereas artificial sucking requires less activity and can alter physiological patterns. Early cessation of breastfeeding is often associated with the development of non-nutritive habits, such as pacifier use and thumb sucking, which predispose children to occlusal imbalances. The systematization of this knowledge is essential for developing effective, low-cost preventive strategies in pediatric oral health. Methodology: This is a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA protocol and the PICO strategy for study selection. The search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Scielo, and Scopus databases, using specific search terms to identify the correlation between breastfeeding and orofacial development from 2020 to 2025. Data analysis was performed through critical reading and a descriptive approach of the selected bibliographic material. Final Considerations: Breastfeeding has established itself as the primary natural stimulus for the harmony of the stomatognathic system, exerting a protective effect against conditions such as anterior open bite and posterior crossbite. Proactive intervention by the dentist, ideally beginning during the prenatal period, is essential to encourage exclusive breastfeeding and prevent the development of harmful habits. Strengthening multidisciplinary educational initiatives is the most effective strategy for ensuring myofunctional balance and the integrity of children’s craniofacial development. | En |
